Bouchardon, Edme

Bouchardon, Edme
(1698-1762)
   sculptor
Born in Chaumont-en-Bassigny, Edme Bouchardon studied first in France, then spent time in Rome (1722 to 1732), where he produced several busts. In Paris, he first designed medals and engravings for the royal furnishings and then worked in the gardens of Versailles, where his work adorned several fountains. An admirer of ancient sculpture, he was opposed to the rococo style then in vogue, and worked in the neoclassical mode (a copy for king louis XV of the Barberini faun, 1726-1730; L'Amour taillant son arc, 1739-50). Bouchardon sculpted and finished the fountain of Quatre-saisons, rue de Grenelle in Paris (1739-50) and the equestrian statue of Louis XV dressed in ancient Roman costume (1748-62).
